My niece, an accountant, was offered a job making about $30,000 more with better benefits. I warned her that her current employer won’t match the offer but they will try to guilt her into staying. Sure enough they asked her to stay with the “we’re a better company” line but didn’t offer more money or better benefits. She politely declined telling them it’s all about the money. Towards the end of the conversation her director asked her if she can pick up some of the IT functions in addition to her accounting because the IT guy just quit. She politely declined the offer to do more work for the same pay. Fast forward to her last day on the job and the “we’re a better company” with record profits starts announcing layoffs. If she had declined the new job and stayed she would have been laid off. Stop thinking your employer cares about you. They do NOT!
