Don’t settle

I was recently talking to a friend about his job and I wanted to let you guys know that good employers are out there and to not settle for anything less. Also, ignore the bad English. English is my first language, I’m just not good at it. Also I’m on mobile so formatting. (I don’t really know what this means I just see a lot of people say it on their posts so if there is something wrong, that’s it) So my friend works for a vet clinic with a specialty (vague for obvious reasons). Also, ignore the bad English. English is my first language, I’m just not good at it. Also I’m on mobile so formatting. (I don’t really know what this means I just see a lot of people say it on their posts so if there is something wrong, that’s it)

So my friend works for a vet clinic with a specialty (vague for obvious reasons). This clinic is part of a large network. The staff realised that the clinic wasn’t making enough to be profitable and so all the staff came together and agreed not to take the 2% raise for the year and all the vets (not the vet’s assistants) agreed to cut their wage in half. (Please keep going I know it doesn’t sound promising so far).

At the end of the year, this clinic was the only clinic in the network that managed to turn a profit. To congratulate the staff, management paid the vets the 50% of the wage that they gave up in one big lump sum, meaning they got 6 months wage in one go. On top of that they gave each staff members a bonus that was a decent percentage of their wage.

With minimum wage going up soon in England, they promised that all staff on their lowest wage will get a wage at least 20% above minimum wage, which put them near the next pay bracket they had, so rather than just giving the raise to the lower bracket, they gave every staff member in the network a raise of the same percentage that minimum wage went up.

The final thing that they do that I thought was great is they pay for insurance for their staff. In England you don’t need health insurance but they pay for extra, meaning that if you need physical therapy or to see a chiropractor (anything not covered by the nhs) they will pay for it. They also have accident insurance, so if you’re in an accident, for example a car crash, even if it’s not at work you will get a payout. The payout is capped at 5k but can be claimed every year.

This isn’t to make you feel bad about the job you have, but to enforce the idea that you don’t need to settle for sub par employment.
