Employer and WFH

My employer verbally told me that I have to start coming into the office. I have done so for a few shifts but it’s so mentally taxing with the extra commute. My plan is to tell my employer verbally I’ll be working from my home office unless told to do so otherwise in writing. I want to do this for a couple reasons. It puts it in writing and it’s not a ‘they said, they said’. It also sets precedence that these jobs were/are capable of being WFH. Is there any law/precedent that states company policies can be verbally given directly to employees and not written? Links would be appreciated. MI, USA in case it matters.
