Employer did not pay overtime at time and a half

Is this ever legal in the US, and would reporting it to my state's department of labor be risky for me in any way? I was not fired, however, I did not leave on good terms with them. It has not been a year since I left. Not sure what the statute of limitations is on this kind of thing, but I imagine at the very least the labor department would want to investigate. I was explicitly told soon after I was hired that I would be paid for overtime but not at time and a half. I trusted the person who told me this, and I'm pretty bitter about it. Honestly, I also feel pretty stupid for not knowing any better. I'm also afraid that the employer would find something to come at me for if I did report them. IDK, any thoughts?
