Employer is trying to sign my partner up for short term disability rather than severance

[lawyers have been contacted] My partner asked for FMLA leave for burnout at the beginning of February which was given to others at their org. They were granted the 3 weeks they requested. In the same meeting they were told that their position had run out of funding and that they would not have a job when they came back from leave. They then got a severance agreement that read like an NDA and is only 1/2 months pay after being at this org for 3 years. NOW they get an email from their employer that they need to submit more documents for short term disability- something they never requested. It feels like the employer wants my partner on short term disability rather than give them severance. Anyone have experience with this?
