Employer takes 50% of credit card tips

I just moved back to my hometown and was looking for a transition job. My mom works at a breakfast diner and said they needed someone so I went in and “interviewed” (barely an interview). The owner has a sister restaurant a door down and asked if I’d be willing to work there as well. I said sure. I spoke to him a couple days later and he said to come in and talk with his brother who mainly runs the sister restaurant. He immediately put me to work with no warning. I only took a few tables during this “training” as I was learning their menu, system, etc. I worked for 4 hours and at the end he said they take 50% of all credit card tips. I came home with $19 total. Wtf. Needless to say I told them I’m not interested.
