Employer threatening to sue for not giving 30 days notice of leaving

My husband is trying to leave his horrible job in a week, but they are threatening to sue him because he signed an employee agreement saying he'd give them 30 days notice. Unforunately this contradicts what is listed in the employee handbook which states they are an at-will employer. Has anyone had an experience with this? Also, is it possible he could give them the 30 days notice but then just refuse to do any work so they're forced to fire him and he can get out of it?
