Entitlement is rampant

My first jobs were in retail, and I have worked as a liability adjuster since 2016. The entitlement of people has only escalated. It used to be the odd Karen screaming when we paid a claim she didn’t think she was at fault for, or if we took too long paying someone else. However, nearly all the claimants I deal with these days behave despicably. I don’t know what changed besides, well, gestures broadly. Checks are taking too long to process and mail, they feel they’re entitled to more than they incurred in bills, or, my favorite, just pay me without any kind of documentation whatsoever, trust me, I’m entitled to it. What on earth is happening and is this uniquely American? Edited to add: the entitlement goes so far as someone telling me they were appalled to receive my out of office message over the Thanksgiving holiday.
