So I work retail at a department store chain and for this holiday season, all the employees get paid extra when they work on the weekends…except for the jewelry department where I work.
Now to start off with we are already paid less per hour than the rest of the employees who work sales floor and cash register. Yeah we get commission but it only adds up to something meaningful on busy days and not everyday is like that.
They claim the reason we can’t get the extra pay is because we get commission but again, it still feels like a crappy excuse because not everyday during the holiday season are we going to have a ton of people coming in to buy the more expensive products. It wouldn’t be so bad if maybe instead of extra pay they gave us a small raise on our commission, but we can’t even get that either.
So on the weekends we are literally working about $5 less per hour than everyone else and there is nothing we can do about it. It just doesn’t feel fair to me.
