Everyone that can afford to eat at the restaurants I used to cook for is always shocked at how little I made

One of my breaking points was a wedding that cost 1 million over the course of 3 days while I was making 12.50/hr with no benefits in 2019 With that particular job it was a contractor that set up shop in a museum and I did sell them my soul for a solid 6 months but apparently I needed to sell them my soul for 12 months to get insurance and paid time off. The cafe shifts were only 6 hours and it was all or nothing with events so getting benefits required 6 days a week in the cafe and events all year round I loved that career but I maxed at 12.50/hr with questionable benefits without selling my soul to management for about 33-38K salaried When I end up talking to people who can regularly afford to eat at places like that they had no idea how little…

When I end up talking to people who can regularly afford to eat at places like that they had no idea how little I made and how much of a high prestige/low reward career it was

These days I'll tell them stories from my career while showing off my skills and the ending part is always the wage I made. I used to watch pro football players climb into their tiny sports cars like a clown trick while making 11.75 in a pastry kitchen. I'll show them the wedding alpacas I got to pet and also that I made 12.50 and finally had some benefits but I was still with roommates in a poorly insulated attic bedroom and was completely over that.

I am overall much happier just using my skills for myself and those close to me while my day job barely gets me an apartment which is still a step up and something non cooking on my resume and has insurance but I do miss restaurants and I would go back for a decent, reliable wage (as in not hopping on the struggle bus because business is slow from January through March), and benefits
