This is a short story but it was so satisfying so I have to share.
I used to work part-time in a small restaurant for some extra money while I study. When I started we had a pretty good manager that cared about the employees. If we needed a day off during exam period, she would make it happen even if she has to take the shift herself. The place was running flawlessly, and the owner was happy.
About a year ago she left for a better job, not in a restaurant. Owner decided he didn't have to hire a new manager, and instead he would take care of everything. It was a clown fest, schedules were late, people got way more hours than they expected/wanted, others didn't get enough, often we found expired food in the fridges or improperly stored food, and cleaning was also lacking. When I raised concerns about it, I was waved off, told that there is much more to running a restaurant than I think. OK boss, I'm just a simple student.
I had enough and left about 6 months ago. Today, I saw an article in the local newspaper, that my former restaurant got a pretty big fine and a bad rating during an inspection by the food safety authorities. They found mould in the kitchen and bathroom, as well as improperly stored meats. If only someone had warned him…
