Expectation of Overtime in engineering

Not sure if this is more of a rant or just something that’s a discussion, but I’ve found over the past 7 years as an engineer there is an expectation of staying “just a little later”. I dunno maybe I’ve just worked for some people that were assholes, but whenever I used to leave on my hours it’s like they were disapproving, if I was working days or double days mind you. If I was in the middle of a job it didn’t matter, you have contracted me for these hours, I don’t work for free. So if you are an apprentice engineer, don’t make staying on slightly later a habit because they will take full advantage of you.
