So this is a topic that has been bothering me lately. I hired on as the only shop welder. As there last one left due to same reasons with unfair pay. Some of our work is your typical fabrication and welding in shop but the other major part is welding on a specific piece of equipment and is mainly field work. Field employees are paid more due to being on the road. Which is understandable, but the part that isn’t to me is that they want us out there welding on million dollar equipment for the same pay as shop. I’m the only company certified welder and they have been hiring new welder for a lot more then me with less experience. Told them I wasn’t willing to travel anymore for 21hr while the other uncertified guys make 30+. So instead they hired more welders for more money but still keep me at the same wage and expect me to train them.
