One of the ways conservatives maintain the mythology of work for the benefit of capitalism is by taking advantage of the confusion between work (activity via which capitalists make a profit) and productive or creative activity itself.
For example, check out this blatant propaganda from Williams Baptist University:
A photograph of a pamphlet from Williams Baptist University, arguing that “Work is biblical.”
Was someone profiting on Adam's “work” in the Garden of Eden? Was Paul exhorting people to “do their work heartily” for the benefit of bosses and bankers?
We might counter with the words of John Ball:
“When Adam delved and Eve span,
Who was then the gentleman?”
In other words, the social constructs via which a few capitalists and profiteers are able to accumulate enormous wealth at the expense of laborers and the natural environment itself are not natural or God-given.
Self-described Christians who attempt to muddy the waters here are acting in league with Mammon.
