I have been employed at a dog daycare for a little over 2 years now. A relatively small business with never really more than 40 staff members at once. Our “owner” also owns the lot our business sits in along with a few other small shops and a liquor store.
Our general manager has (supposedly) a long history with the owner, which is how I believe they even got the job in the first place. Our general manager doesn’t know anything about any of the dogs. Solid chance he wouldn’t be able to identify about 95% of the dogs that come in daily. The owner I’ve personally seen come to the business once in the last 2 years. Most of the time the only reason the owner comes anywhere near the business is to pick up their dogs (who get watched for free, obviously). Owner pulls up in a big truck with a big boat attached, uses our equipment (which is already very limited due to “limited budget”) and takes the equipment home, never to be seen again.
Staff come and go constantly. I’ve seen 30+ employees in the last 6 months come and go. We’re not paid holiday pay despite being open 24/7 365, even though clients are charged a “holiday fee”. I get a $50 bonus for the holidays. I am 1 of 3 remaining afternoon supervisors (one of which is brand new from training). And the boss will hire just anyone, I mean some of the people who work here have 0 common sense whatsoever. But it doesn’t matter because the general manager leaves at about Noon every day and their workday is done. We get short breaks, which my boss justifies by “paying us for breaks” one 20 minute break is NOT enough for 8 hours of work. 30 minutes for 10 hour shifts.
I want to quit, I’m exhausted. But these animals will not get taken care of without me and the other remaining supervisors.
