My Fiancé and I live on the east coast, but are currently getting ready to head to the other side of the country for a job I accepted. Her job recently contacted her saying that they need to change her to a 1099 employee because having employees in other states is expensive for the company.
This sounds kinda fishy to me since she has already been working remotely, and her job duties would be exactly the same. We requested that her hours be shifted to align with her new time zone, but they refused to do so – resulting in a shift from 9-5 to 6-2.
Does this sound legit to you guys? I know we will have to handle taxes on our own now, but I’m worried that there are some other implications that we’re missing. Maybe I’m just paranoid, but I’m thinking this might be an attempt by her employer to fire her in the future without the possibility of protections like unemployment benefits.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated!!
