So I work at a leisure facility, primarily lifeguarding and cleaning, and we’re currently having some serious staffing issues. Management have loved going on the “thanks everyone who’s worked extra shifts and picked up the slack during this time”, meanwhile management haven’t changed what they’re doing. They don’t get paid for extra time worked, instead they get those hours back as time off. It’s really up to them when they take that time off which is where the problems come from:
There’s zero consideration to how them leaving will affect the shift.
When a manager leaves early another member of staff steps up into a supervisor position taking over managements responsibilities. That effectively puts us a person down from that point on. At our swimming pool on a weeknight we require 3 lifeguards minimum to operate. There should however, be 6 people on shift. Last night we had 3 people on shift and management decided to leave early because “it’s a nice night and I want a pint”. That leaves 2 lifeguards to do 6 peoples worth of work.
At the end of my shift I put out an email to all management explaining what had happened and it was ridiculous. Told them I was putting in holidays for the weekend and I won’t be in again until my shift on Wednesday. At that shift I’ll be in a formal meeting with my managers boss to discuss the incident and I’ll be bringing up everything else management have done lately to lead to this point
