My corporate career started a little bit less than ideal. Within the first 6 months with my company I went from a team of 8 + a manager to a team of 3, no manager. A month later I was the sole member of my team with under a year of experience.
What did I do? I took on the extra work, I held in any complaints, and I worked 24/7 to keep the team above ground. I told my boss’s boss who was now remotely overseeing me that I believed in rebuilding this team and offered to help in anyway they might need.
For 2 months I was the sole team member with no direct supervisor and I continued doing the work of my 8 person team. They told me they were building a team around me and were so grateful for my help. They blew a lot of smoke up my ass.
3 weeks ago they finally brought on a new manager who hired 2 team members on their first week. I was excited to rebuild the team and make the office great. My manager was an external hire and I towed the line between helping and overstepping as they learned the ropes of their new industry.
This morning I was let go and told that my boss didn’t feel the need to “go into detail” about the reason, but shared this was their decision. I understand I live in an at will state, but WTH??
Did my new manager just want to “start fresh”? Was this my boss’s boss’ plan all along even before they hired a new manager!? Did my new manager dislike me? Was I simply disposable?
Oh the questions I have…
