For larger companies that are doing lay offs why cant they just use their net profits to maintain their current employees?

I saw this guide on reddit about profits major tech companies make and I wondered besides just greed if there was a legitimate reason why companies don’t take their net profits and maintain the salary of their current employee count? I mean the net profits are in the billions …granted that could decline with a recession but wouldn’t these companies pictured in the guide still come out on top money wise? I dont completely get the strategy of letting people struggle
