Friend got laid off abruptly

Hi All, asking for a friend who got laid off abruptly in New York, US. They had 100+ hours of PTO collected and approved for an upcoming vacation and they got laid off 2 weeks before and given 2 week notice. They had been working there for 3.5+ years as of termination, and were on good standing. The only thing which was going a little awry was that they refused to go back to work, and cited mental health seasons, and shared a note with the employer as well. Could they sue the employer for wrongful termination ? Employer cited this position is no longer needed. It’s a little hard to understand employment laws in US since everything seems to be “At will” – lord knows whatever the joke that is. Thanks is advance !
