Fuck outsourcing.

I just need to vent a little. I work for a US-based company from another country, at a call centre. It’s absolutely fine, not the soul-crushing hell that call centre jobs usually are. No AHT, no goals to meet, not a lot of calls. I’ve genuinely liked working here for the past two months. However. I made the mistake of checking what our US-based colleagues are getting paid. Now, to be fair, I’ve never expected to be paid the same amount, I understand that the cost of living is significantly lower for us, etc. But Jesus Christ. Without mentioning concrete numbers — my US colleagues make about 200% more than the average for the same position. I make a little more than minimum wage. It’s very hard to stay motivated when you’re faced without just how little you’re valued in the work your entire team does.

I still like this job and it’s a very good catch considering my other options, and my pay is OK because minimum wage is a living wage here (-ish, of course, if you don’t have family and have a roommate but whatever), but I can’t help but feel offended. I’m not amazing at my job, but neither are all of my US colleagues.

Anyway, this is all, thank you for coming to my TED talk.
