Hello everybody! I just wanted some discussion and advice about the situation I find myself in. I graduated college this past May with a degree in business administration. I live in a small city of just over 70,000. I didn’t have many prospects for jobs or companies that I was interested in but there is a couple that stuck out to me and the main one I was interested in primarily because of their stellar values and investments in the community hired me and I couldn’t have been more ecstatic, the pay is below what I expected but I excepted because I have no prior experience in finance and just wanted to get my foot in the door with a good starter job. I am now in the process of enrolling in my 401(k) when I was on the phone with the provider for the plan and they informed me that the companies 401(k) match at 5% would not be vested until after three years of being with the company. This completely caught me off guard and made me incredibly frustrated because prior to this they had made no statements of this being the case I only plan to stay in this position for about two years so I could gain some experience and then find a job that paid more than what I’m currently paid (16.50), I love this company and definitely don’t plan on leaving anytime soon and up to this point they have treated me with nothing but respect and kindness. It just seems like they have put me in a pair of Golden shackles holding the thousands of dollars that they had promised to match over my head so I stay with them for a full three years, my question is do I have a right to be incredibly frustrated this? I assume this was in the fine print, but I failed to see it or was failed to be informed of it. Is there anything I can do about this or should I simply take this as a learning lesson and continue on to put in my years whether it be to without getting the money that will be vested in my 401(k), that is potentially thousands of dollars, or stick it out the full three years get my vested money and then move on?
