Long story short, I was hired by a “tech” company a couple months ago. The huge reason I took the offer was because it was fully remote, salaried, unlimited PTO and the perks go on and on. I knew accepting the offer that we were going to be acquired by a much larger company, but we were assured that nothing will change besides, maybe some titles and gain some extra perks.
I’m currently working on my degree, so to me, getting this job without a degree (I do have experience) is a dream. Before I was commuting so much 5 days a week and made significantly less in a company that was just toxic and very corporate. So I’ve been very excited.
Couple days ago we were told that because our job duties are similar to one of the other roles within the company we are merging into, that our titles would change, we will no longer get unlimited PTO, nor are we going to be salaried, but revert to hourly.
Needless to say, I’m scared that layoffs will be happening soon. Our immediate management team is assuring us all is okay, to just keep focused and stick together and work our butts off. Of course they want that… there’s numbers to hit and WE are a reflection of them and so therefore, their jobs rely on how well we do.
But I as well as many others feel super duped. Hired with these promises and literally all taken away. So I don’t trust that our jobs are safe if they can so easily turn like that. In fact those in the other company that have similar roles make LESS and we are supposed to kind of train them. My guess? Training them to take over our jobs at a much lower cost to the merging company. Further, the role is extremely stressful and about to be moreso and the training we received has been subpar, disorganized, confusing, we are about to start our sales season and they just changed up some products a few days ago and barely got us the talk tracks for all of it yesterday.
We should be feeling nervous and start preparing, right?
I’ve been wanting to start my own, small, trade related company (I have experience in this other trade and it’s a passion of mine), but I’m trying to ride this out because it’s great money and my company would take at least a year to really build clientele. Honestly, although I am grateful, I’m so beyond stressed and now throw on feel duped and mislead, I’m just over it… as are others.
Anyway, my heart goes out to everyone in the tech world right now. No one is safe, they’ll make promises they can’t keep, but at the end of the day, we are just numbers to create large monetary numbers for them. I’m so bummed, I finally felt like I found my place to stick with and now I feel paranoid and anxiety ridden because of all of this.
