So I've been with my org for 4 months. It's been great. The beginning salary was a bit low, but I figured whatever. Tbh I didn't think I'd pass the background check and so negotiating the salary was a bit beyond me at that point. The perks/ benefits made it enough for me to forget the extra I should be getting paid. A trade-off, I figured…
Recently my org did a 3rd party pay study, and I was identified as underpaid (surprise surprise). My annual salary was bumped 4k/ yr. (Honestly 6-8 seems more appropriate to me but I bet they're fudging- no worries, not looking a gift horse in the mouth.)
But the kicker is this: 1) my boss had been telling me for awhile that she'd be looking to have me raised within a year. This am we were on a call where she said “isn't this raise great? You must be so excited?”
I'm not excited. Sure, extra $$ is good but this isn't a 'raise', to me. It's a correction of a mistake. This really has nothing to do with me, personally. I'm still expecting my 'raise'.
2), the kicker: “keep this confidential. Because not everyone got an adjustment.”
Isn't it my right to talk about wages with my coworkers? Why do I need to agree to waive my rights? If the org is truly focused on 'fair/ competitive' pay aligned with our 'compensatory philosophy', then what is there to hide?
Tldr: I felt happy about my pay bump until I realized my org is as slimy as all the others.
