Got fired after being the victim of an armed robbery

I (23M) Managed a cbd/smokeshop making 17/hour working 45ish hours a week. Sales when i took over were 1,700 a day and i got them to 4,300 on weekdays 5-6k profits on weekends. Felt very lucky to have it and felt relatively well compensated with bonuses every once in a while. As sales grew, my employees (college students) who worked part time also went from earning 10/hour to 12 and some 13. Fast forward to getting robbed by three guys screaming with guns pointed in my face. Thought I was going to die. Called up my boss (30M) immediately after and the first words out of his mouth were “What’d they take?” They got about 800$ from the register and $1000 in product. Boss says he wants me to keep it a secret from the other employees and will pay me $500 to do so. Cops show up and give…

Cops show up and give me a support helpline for victims of violent crimes in Georgia. I dial the phone number and its out of service.

Cops dust for fingerprints all over. I show cops tape of all 3 robbers wearing gloves. Cops tell me the print dust they left everywhere will come up with lysol wipes and they leave.

Got 4 days off work (even though I worked the day after) and had a sit-down with my boss about preventative safety measures. He asked what safety measures we could add to the store. I said maybe a security guard because cops told me the store was an easy mark that they’d likely hit again. He said too expensive. I said maybe a security guard for weekends when its busy. He said too expensive. I said maybe we change the layout of the store because it doesn’t cost anything. He says not worth it. He says won’t make a difference.

At that point my body was heating up. I asked why he kept asking me what to do if he wasn’t open to suggestions. In hindsight, it was a ploy to get a rise out of me and it worked. I leave on shakier terms with him but we were at least able to hash it out which was what the meeting was for.

Later that night, I get an email titled employment saying:

“Your employment has been terminated due to miscommunication and not being on the same page. I believe it is in the best interest of both parties to end this agreement.”

Over the next week everyone who knows about the robbery is let go and replaced (I make this part easier by telling everyone else what happened and they quit).

Girlfriends dad shows zero sympathy and asks what did i expect working at a place like that. Family keeps the story hidden from my grandparents for some reason.

After the whole thing went down it was really hard knowing that basically every boss I’ve had before or since has zero regard for my life. When people said it before I would take it as a joke but now i know better.
