Handed my notice in today – on to the future!

I handed my notice in today. To keep it short and sweet, I'm one year into a 40 hour a week job, Monday to Friday, 8-5 and I find it miserable. I like the weekends off and that's about it. By the time I get home each weeknight I'm usually knackered from a pretty intense day and end up doing almost nothing with my evenings. It could be so much better despite the 40 hours but I find myself doing the jobs of about three people by myself yet only earn just above the minimum wage. There's a horrible blame culture in the office and a purposefully created divide between the office staff and 'the rest' which I don't like at all.

I've got one week left to work there (notice period) then I'm off on holiday to enjoy the sun for two weeks before planning my next move. I'm a firm believer in “if you're not happy with your situation then make a change” and I'm feeling good that I'm doing exactly that.

I'm in my late twenties, so for anyone who has been in a similar situation, what were your next steps?

For a bit more detail, I've got a degree in journalism and media studies that I never really did anything with, and have lots of experience within retail (management) and office work. These types of jobs will try and convince you that it's your level and that you should stay there forever.

I'm thinking of trying to go down the self employed route, or else to try and do some voluntary work along with part time work for some cash to try and attempt to do something with my degree but I'm not sure how it'll all pan out!

We are all only on this planet once and no job is worth making yourself feel miserable. Here's to the future! 🙂
