so i just moved from one franchise location to another. it’s a small restaurant chain in florida and i am currently working as a server/cashier.
i had to take a server test at my previous location before they gave me any of the non-cash tips i earned. it’s a menu test that requires i memorize essentially every menu item — every ingredient, every name, every variant, etc. even ones that weren’t on the menu, but fine. i get it. i worked about a month or two there before earning any tips — i wasn’t aware that i had to take the test, otherwise i wouldn’t have done any serving work for them (i was just a cashier there) but apparently they DID tell me that i had to. so it was my fault.
like i said i’ve been moved to a new location during the slow season and after asking about where my cash tips were (we split them at closing here but i work day shit and haven’t received any) i was told that once again, i have to take the menu test to be eligible to receive them. i’m really pissed because this location pays me even less since i’m meant to be a server — so like, half the money i’m making is tips! or is supposed to be!
i’m really bummed out because i am CERTAIN no one told me i had to retake the menu test. i get why, there’s a slightly different menu here, but the fact that they worked me for nearly 3 weeks without telling me is incredibly upsetting. i only found out because i asked.
is this legal? anyone have similar experiences? anyone want to cry with me?
