Higher up thinks we shouldn’t be paying influencers under 100k followers cause we’re a nonprofit

I work at a nonprofit and we’re working on a campaign with influencers to spread the word. My supervisor is out so I had to run something by another person in leadership who oversees the org as a whole (we’re small). We’re paying each influencer a few hundred dollars each to make a post about the campaign (it’s basically them telling their personal stories with a call to action related to the campaign). This person said “well I’ve worked with celebrities who have done this (nonprofit campaigns) for free in the past” then went onto say the title of this post. I shared that the industry has changed especially because of pay disparities with marginalized influencers. Am I crazy for thinking these people should still get paid even though we’re a nonprofit? Like celebrities can afford to do this for free, not these people, who are mostly organizers too.
