Hired as an hourly non-exempt out of college for a gov. contracting position. Took this job to “get my foot in the door” as my parents kept telling me. 4 years later, I’m the only one hourly in my program, despite being the only one with a bachelors degree and networking certification. Every time I’ve push the directive, I’m told there’s no money in the budget and that “it’s only a technicality. Just put 40 for the week regardless of what you actually log. There’s no funding for OT”. I’m still living at home (27 nearly 28) because I can’t afford local rent.
I have another job lined up which is a significant pay bump, but I was trying to make it work here since this is 15 minutes from my house and I would have to relocate for the new position.
I took the position at 53k due to not having experience in the field. I’ve seen a 2-3% raises year on year, but for my location with my certifications, companies are hiring at 91k+.
Because the company moved me around to different aspects of the task, the job I’m performing is nowhere near the job I was hired for. So they don’t have a job description for me other than Program/Project ops. I was asked to write my own job description and I gave it to my “boss” over a month ago with no response because “we’ve been so busy recently.”
It is much more stressful than my previous role, demands physical on the job presence, and requires autonomy (ability to work independent from a supervisor). I say supervisor, but it’s only me and my “boss”, who makes nearly double. The guy who hired me is actually one level above my “boss”, but because of how the program changed, I was put under his group.
When we were 1 on 1, the customer asked me how my company is treating me, so I let it slip I’m hourly. He was astonished and said he’d be checking up on that and would “go to bat” for me.
