I ran into a rough patch and ended up homeless, I was fortunate enough that only after staying in a shelter for 2 months, I was able to find a new job to help me get back on my feet. Or at least that's what I thought.
I got hired for a serving job at a restaurant also doubling as a bartender, I asked questions received answers, did my background check and passed, and went to my training which included some computer tests, today.
They gave me the company shirt to wear, but for some reason they didn't give me shoes. I learned today at training that I need to have black slip proof shoes to be a server which is fine and that's apparently common for the job, but when I asked why they didn't include it with the rest of the uniform they told me I have to pay for it separately, something they neglected to mention earlier. My local Macys cheapest pair is $53 for a pair of slip proof shoes which is a lot for someone in my position, the one Walmart we have doesn't have any slip free shoes in stock.
What I don't understand is, they knew I was homeless when I was hired because a friend of mine helped set up the interview who works there, to help me get the job. How exactly am I supposed to pay for these shoes when I'm poor?
I have to pay in order to work? Is that the new thing now? Or is that a server specific thing? The shelter won't help, in fact they've not been very helpful throughout all this, so how am I supposed to be be able to get these shoes?
I'm supposed to have my first full-day tomorrow on Monday, and when I told them to give me a week they said they need people to work now ASAP. To be fair, that is what I agreed to in the interview, but they also told me during the interview I would received a uniform, not half the uniform. I don't want to miss this opportunity and end up back with no job either.
What am I supposed to do here?
