I posted a couple of days ago but my situation has worsened. I started at this hospital almost 90 days ago. We are in the middle of a massive flu/strep/RSV outbreak. I have been sent home twice due to illness. My spouse now has covid so I'm assuming there's a good chance I'll get it as well.
Several of my coworkers have been written up for being out sick. Even with doctors excuses or if you were sent home it goes against you. Apparently during the first 90 days you will be written up for missing twice. So now it appears I'm going to get my first write up in 15 years. If I miss another (which is likely given my spouse is sick) my orientation will be extended 3 more months (meaning I can't use my paid time off) and if I miss another day during those 3 months I will be terminated.
I suppose I should mention that the policy past the introductory 90 days isn't much better. It allows for 5 call outs in a whole year. And those days count individually (meaning if you are off 4 days for an illness then that is 4 of your 5 allowances) it doesn't matter if it's the same episode.
I am so disgusted at hospitals and our American work system. I am a good employee and I was trying to do the right thing by reporting that I was ill and both times was contagious. Now I am very likely going to be punished for that.
