I used to work in a non unionized role and god it was difficult to ask for what I wanted because I couldn’t be direct. And when I was, i would conjure emotions into it and get really angry cause I know I was worth more and they wouldn’t be willing to dish out the money. Now I’m in a union and I don’t have to worry about this stuff (I have a steward and lawyers on staff so I can basically say whatever but still am a really nice human ring just have backup).
Yet here, I see lots of people quite direct and at points confrontational. I don’t expect to be confrontational ever cause it’s counterproductive to the objective of say getting a raise but sometimes being direct can be so difficult for myself as well.
How do you all do it?
