How big of a factor is commute in accepting a job?

I've been on the job hunt again for less than a month, and got a call from a recruiter. The job was going to be remote for about 4~6 months, but the company wanted to get people back in the corporate offices soon after. The corporate office is also about 40 minutes to an hour by freeway, and that commute time to and from the job felt like a dealbreaker for me. The previous job was only about 15 minutes away, with and without freeway travel. With how much time, focus, and gas is needed to be spent to do all that, I'd probably make less per paycheck even if the raise was about $2 more than my previous job. It makes me think the commute should count as part of the working time.
