How can one cash in on PTO after putting in notice?

Just put in three weeks notice at an extremely toxic work place. I had requested off for dates in May the week prior and was informed that May was a black out month (?) and that my request was denied. I was tempted to reply that I would be taking the days with or without the approval, but circumstances led me to just put in my notice following this incidence and that battle fell to the wayside. The owner doesn’t have an obligation to allow me to take those days, does he? They’re just gone, right? Ideally I’d work my two weeks and take the last week off to try and cash on my PTO- but if that’s not approved (and it won’t be) those will be unpaid days. It seems unfair if I’ve got it in my contract that I’m entitled to X amount of days for PTO and…
