Alright not to sound too cynical but… I just don’t trust companies to do what’s best for their workers.
Basically, one of my jobs (not my main income but it’s about minimum wage for not much work so it’s a good side job) is content creation for this big company, the biggest in the field of its kind. I’m employed with them as a freelancer basically, and get paid per content piece plus some percentage of ad money.
There’s two types of ad money. Type A I get paid already, type B i need to reach a minimum threshold of $15k to start receiving that ad money, which it’s likely I’ll only reach right at the end of my contract anyway so I’ll get very little of it.
They’ve recently contacted me offering to switch me over to a new contract they’re testing out where there is no minimum- I get paid ad money B right away alongside the rest of my pay.
Not only that, when I said I’d need time to think about it they pushed and said my content is an exception because they’re only offering it to people who are really close to that $15k goal but I’m not; and they’re being especially generous with me because my series has been a good size and had very stable readership for its genre, so they want to offer me good terms even though they are already losing money on my series as their ad revenue doesn’t cover the cost of my content as it is.
But I just can’t shake the feeling of like, why even bother to renew my content for another run and offer me this if it’s so bad for you financially? Companies don’t work against their own interests.
The new contract also switches me from a higher percentage of net revenue to a slightly lower percentage of gross revenue (they claim this will result in a higher revenue overall).
Basically, this seems like it would be a very good thing for me and very bad thing for them. Why would they do this? What should I be on the lookout for?
