how i got a 22% payrise and a new job in a week

I work in legal tech support. My specialty is not only computers and the specialist software lawyers use but also understanding their special needs. I was working for a multinational law firm – in a shift, I could take calls from Sydney, London, Hong Kong, and St Petersberg. I joined this company in 2018, and it was my first legal support role. They were in the process of moving the helpdesk to my city, and I was the first hire. as part of this, I provided feedback to the bosses on new hires and how they are going and eventually sat in on interviews.

My role was primarily remote support (I could remote into a users pc and fix issues or do server stuff, but if I needed someone to be on-site we had local people to do this)

in the next few years, my role expanded unofficially to doing deskside support as our local guy was unreliable and he called off a lot.

Internal jobs came up (2nd level support, help desk). I would apply. I would be rejected for various BS reasons. i since found out i didn't get any promotions as i was “too good and did not want to lose me on helpdesk”

I was promised things that never happened – various certs (ITEL), I would be made officially the deskside backup, etc.

Eventually, it came to head last year. end of the financial year, I got my pay rise for it (keeping in mind I got nothing in 2020 and 2021 thanks to “covid” despite us making record profits – I knew this thanks to emails from the country managing partner we all got)

that payrise – 1.4% I spoke to my boss and told him how pissed I was. he said he understood, but the wages were not set by him (i fully understood this and did not blame him) i just asked him if it was cheaper to give me a $5,000 raise than pay a recruiter. he said it was, but once again out of his hands.

I then started looking and within 3 days I had 4 interviews scheduled. within a week I had a deskside job offer with a 22% pay rise, better working hours, and even got my own office (my last job was open plan)

when i put my notice in, that's when all hell broke loose. the head of IT called trying to convince me to stay and even offered me a car park and a work mobile. I rejected it all.

ive been in my new firm for about 8 months, i do deskside support and i honestly love it.

my advice: KNOW YOUR VALUE
