How much notice should I give?

I’ve worked for the past 6 years at a community college. Despite being a college, it is a very conservative campus. The president has hauled people in his office for allowing faculty on committees to discuss unionizing, we have received one cost of living raise for the entire 6 years I’ve been there, and after 6 years and a promotion to tenure I still make 42k/yr. I have another job lined up making twice as much money. I have accepted. But I’m not sure how much of a notice I should give to my dean. This position would require a 2 step interview process with a hiring committee formed to do interviews. I will obviously use trusted bosses for future recommendations (which is not my direct boss). Over summers I receive a useful bonus for teaching classes as a full time professor. I fear that telling them now would mean…

Over summers I receive a useful bonus for teaching classes as a full time professor. I fear that telling them now would mean I don’t get that bonus. I’ve also heard rumors a few years ago that another person gave notice at the end of spring semester and lost their benefits immediately even though their new job didn’t start until the fall.

So do I give a 2 weeks? 1 month? Should I have already told them? I’ve never quit a professional job before. I’m worried that giving notice too soon or too late will both have unforeseen consequences.
