So, I recently made what I thought was a smart change on my resume. I added a line next to my phone number saying, “Please reach out via email to schedule a time to chat.” I figured this would save both the employers and myself the hassle of playing phone tag after it happened multiple times. But boy, was I wrong.
After making this change, my rejection rate skyrocketed to 100%. Not a single call or email came my way. It's crazy to think that such a small tweak could have such a big impact on my job search. And I thought my experience in the tech field had prepared me well for navigating the job search process.
Before making this change, I would usually get a random call for an interview every 20 to 30 applications I submitted. But now, crickets. It's like my resume is collecting dust in some employer's inbox.
Moral of the story, sometimes playing it “safe” or “smart” can actually work against you in the job search game.
