(How) should I re-negotiate my job scope?

I work a double role and I like to think that I’m getting compensated fairly for it, although they did mention during the interview that my highest last drawn salary would be taken into consideration for what they are offering. I couldn’t find their job posting for that position after the first interview, and I felt the offer was good so I accepted it. The double role turns out to be more of a triple role, with the third being an awkward task which doesn’t quite fit into anyone else’s job scope. My main priority (the one I want, and I believe they understood) is role #1 (out of the 2 in the job title), but lately role #2 has been taking up way too much of my time, and with the world opening up more tasks are going to be added on to role #2 as the world transforms…

The double role turns out to be more of a triple role, with the third being an awkward task which doesn’t quite fit into anyone else’s job scope.

My main priority (the one I want, and I believe they understood) is role #1 (out of the 2 in the job title), but lately role #2 has been taking up way too much of my time, and with the world opening up more tasks are going to be added on to role #2 as the world transforms from virtual back to physical attendance. I don’t want to be stuck doing more of role #2 and risk getting blamed for not doing enough for role #1, even though so far they have feedback that there has been marked improvements with role #1 tasks since I took over.

I certainly agreed to the job, but I’d really love to do more for role #1 as that is what I love to do, but to do that I’m going to need more time in my assigned work hours, which would inevitably mean less time and attention to tasks that don’t fall into role #1. Doing more for role #1 will also help improve business.

I can’t determine yet if management is the type who will also re-negotiate salary if they agree to take one role away or simply ask me to leave even though they have mentioned that they have previously adjusted job roles/tasks for employees when they realise their passion lies in only one part of their roles.

I want to tell the truth, but I also don’t want to be short changed salary wise. I won’t be doing lesser than now, I will just using the time I would have spent doing role #2 into doing (much) more for role #1.

Appraisal is coming up in a couple of months and I’m not sure if I should bring this up either before or during appraisal. A colleague mentioned that it’d be safer to do so during appraisal but they mentioned that they were the one who handed role #2 to my predecessor so I did wonder if they’re just delaying the possibility that they will be told to take the tasks back.

How should I approach the subject and should I bring it up before or during the appraisal?
