I know it sounds odd to be in this sub but hear me out.
I’m a mechanic, business is painfully slow and it’s getting harder to make ends meet. Mechanics generally aren’t paid hourly, rather paid flat rate (paid by the job). If I’m not turning a wrench I’m not making money, so sitting around for 9 hours without touching a car is a remarkable waste of time.
In October 2022 I had an interview and a tentative offer for a job where I’m paid hourly, working on a fleet of trucks instead of customer cars. Much better opportunity financially. The guy straight up said he liked me for the position and that he would figure out the policy regarding my potential hire.
Long story short, they were an outside company who contracted for the company I worked for at the time, and my company had rules for me returning as an employee/contractor. I emailed him 90 days later after the waiting period, in January, and he said the position was filled but that he would look into it and let me know if anything changed.
I guess the real question is, what is corporate talk for “hey I’m really desperate to work there, is the position open yet?” Or should I take the hint and look elsewhere?
