HR Director took a PTO day from me because she thought I was sick – red flag or honest mistake?

Hi there, hoping y’all can help me settle my nerves over this. I started a new job back in October ‘22, it’s a small company about 40 people. On 12/23, I was online all day, responded to a few emails, got a couple things done. Same deal all through the next week minus the weekday makeup “holidays” like day after Christmas, day after New Years Day. Today, I logged into my HR software to check how my (already very little) PTO accrual has been going since my start date. I noticed that I was -8.00 hours than I expected to be. Turned out my HR director “approved” a full PTO day from me on 12/23.

When I asked her about this and whether it was a mistake, she said “I understood that you were sick that day, no?”

I did not request this day off in the system or via email, and I was not sick. I do not speak to this person on a daily basis so she has no reason to think that I was sick, or even away from my desk. I told her I was not sick, and said that she would fix it but she has notoriously not done things she has promised to do in the past, so I am waiting, and scared that she will not actually give the time back..

I did not think this was possible for her to even do, and I’m scared to ask other coworkers about this scenario happening to them because I don’t want to seem gossip-y or starting any drama.

I just started this job and I believe that, although I am p good at it, the benefits/pay are not anything spectacular… But the work that my company does is socially impactful and has been cool to see.

Would this be a red flag to you, or is this a common/innocent mistake in your opinion?

Thanks!!
