I used to work for this company in manufacturing. I busted my ass for 3 years and didn't make much progress moving up the chain because they favored the old timers who dedicated the last 20-30 years to the company. This was fine as I always just viewed the place as a stepping stone.
Flashforward a few years and I moved back to the town this factory is in. I saw they had an office position open that pays double the people on the floor make and it has a hybrid work schedule, where I only have to go into the office a couple days a week. It's walking distance from the home I bought. I accepted the job last year.
When I was hired on I was given 120 vacation hours (and 16 floating holiday hours). The assumption was this is because I had been with the company so long I'm starting again with the hours I had when I left. I never had a reason to doubt the hours I was given. We recently changed over our payroll to a new system, so I noticed that the last couple vacation days I took had a negative in front of the number. I thought this was odd so I reached out to HR, but I expected it to be a new system error.
Turns out they ACCIDENTLY gave me my old hours instead of resetting me as a new hire. The company doesn't view me as a rehire, dispute everyone calling me one, so I'm reset back to step one. HR said they went on and gave me the 120 hours this year, but next year this resets down to 80. At no point did they reach out to me to tell me any of this was a thing. The only reason I'm still working here was because of the 120 hours pf vacation I thought I get a year.
I basically told HR everything I just said, so I'm not just venting into the void. Just waiting on a response. I'm curious if there's legal action I can take, because HR never made an effort to inform me of their mistake.
TL;DR: HR made a mistake and gave me 120 hours of vacation when they shouldn't have because they are supposed to treat rehires as new hires. Now I'm looking for a new job.
