I can’t do it – I cannot and will not pretend to “LOVE my company and OUR MISSION! ONE TEAM ONE DREAM!”. Start up culture is BULLLLLSHlllllTTTTT

After our third round of layoffs (this round with zero severance or warning) I can't do it anymore. I am only still employed because I manage our legally required COBRA benefits. If you work for a corporation and your Facebook cover image is your company's offsite picnic then CHANGE THAT SHIT. This is particularly true for startup culture. These poor folks were creating #slack hobby groups within our company, which included after hours get togethers. They made t-shirts about being here. They made a god damn “The Office” parody about our company which was lame as fuck, but they really wanted to show it at company all hands. This is absurd. At least old time, legacy companies are up front about how awful they are. But start ups are a unique level of awful bullshit. Oh, and just FYI, I was called in twice by my manager asking why I “don't seem to hang out with coworkers” at social meetups at the bar after after work. Like, it was kind of required… but not…. but yes it kind of is.

I'm 46 years old. These people were on average about 27. And every one of those 27 year olds just got laid off in ruthless fashion. I mean, “here's your shit in a cardboard box, don't touch anything including your mouse pad, security is there by the door, ask them about any questions.”
