I didn’t know where else to post this

My mom just called me hysterical. She could barley get a word out. 33 years she put into this company and they just laid off her whole department 3 weeks before Christmas. She is 63 years old and was 2 years away from retiring. Now she has absolutely no idea what she is going to do. Her company was bought out by a publicly traded company roughly 6 months ago. She works in the medical field working with patients daily. She came in this morning and noticed her schedule for today was completely cleared so she asked her boss what was going on. Her boss said she had no idea and headed to her office to make a phone call to see what was happening. 15 minutes later they get an email about a mandatory conference call at 11am CST.

Her whole department was laid off during that call.

They told her she could stay on with the company but would have to move to an entry level position where she would have to float from office to office and her schedule would fluctuate from 6am to 10pm on any given day. At 63 years old she is scared to start over and doesn’t want to work a schedule not knowing where she will be needed and at what time on any given day.

My mom put herself through college while raising me and my brother and has absolutely worked her ass off her entire life so that we could have what we needed. We didn’t have extras but we had enough. She specifically went to college to get a degree and a career in the medical field so that she would have job security and wouldn’t have to fear of a day like today.

And than today happened.

My heart brakes for her. She will be okay but it shouldn’t be this way. And she isn’t the only one as I said her whole department got the boot. Roughly 100 people all with families to take care of 3 weeks before Christmas. All so they could trim “fat” for the shareholders.

I used to lurk this sub but never actually joined until now. I didn’t know where else to post this.

All I can say is fuck corporate America for chewing up had working people like my mom and spitting them out 3 weeks before Christmas.

P.S. Mom we’re going to be okay. I promise.
