thinking back to the time when i was interning at a large utility company as a software engineer. the job listing said that the position was completely remote and after i got hired, one day before the day of my first day there, they said they had changed their WFH policy to “in person 5 days a week” for interns. i was appalled but stayed on because i needed money and most other summer internship applications had closed. All of my work was on the computer and even the meetings were on zoom because everyone who wasn’t an intern were still WFH. me and 4 other people (other interns and field workers) were the only ones in the office. i went to work everyday (my manager literally checked the camera to make sure i was there) and after 1.5 months there, I got into an accident and tore multiple ligaments. i couldn’t walk so i told them i couldn’t come in but knew they needed me to work so i could WFH if they wanted. i was in the hospital when my manager told me “please bring a note stating what happened to you and proof of the incident” i was appalled. i sent him all the proof along with a doctors note, he noticed it said bed rest for 1 week and then i can use crutches to go to the bathroom and stuff so he… asked me to come into the office. I quit on the spot and then came the apologies. They finally allowed me to WFH (which was completely possible since the beginning) but i think i hurt his ego because he made my life living hell after but i tolerated it because i was leaving anyway.
ps. they didn’t have a working HR department because all the HR people quit and they never refilled their positions
