A while back I was looking for work. I had quit my toxic paraprofessional job and was just living off my savings during that time I ended up having what I think is probably the most insulting job interview I've ever had and for context I've worked at dollar tree and dollar general for people so delusional to think that that company gives a fuck about them Despite only paying them $0.05 over minimum wage. This was just your run-of-the-mill retail job it was for this little boutique sort of place in a strip mall. I remember showing up to the interview and the person I was supposed to interview didn't even show up they just called the store and did my interview over the phone while I sat in that store. I kind of knew after that interview I didn't wanna work there and it was all moot anyways because I never heard back. Until today. While I was at my lunch break I saw that I had missed some phone calls. I didn't recognize the number but decided to call back because I was waiting for a phone call from my doctor's office and didn't have the number saved in my phone so I thought that it might have just been them giving me a call back about the status of the medication. The person who picked up wasn't from my doctor's office but the shitty manager who I had interviewed over the phone not only was she rude saying that I should have called back sooner. For context I work in a library now so I keep my phone on silent so that I'm not disturbing patrons and during the time that she had called I was busy doing story time with our toddler group that comes in. Before I can say anything to this she's telling me that she's decided to hire me and has already put me on the schedule and that I need to be there by 6:00 AM tomorrow to help open the store. When I finally was able to get a word in edgewise I told her one I don't work for you and two I interviewed with you three months ago and this is the first time I'm hearing back from you. She responded that I wouldn't get far in life with that attitude and that I needed to just do what she wanted because she was short-staffed. I'm putting it mildly she went on a tirade for about a good five minutes before I was finally able to tell her I am employed and I don't need the job that she was offering to which she screamed at me. Saying that I owed her somehow a shift at this boutique. To be clear I have never worked there I had one shitty interview but somehow in her mind that equated to me working for her there's no W2 there's no paperwork and when I said OK fine if I am gonna go in how much am I gonna get paid she told me that because I was making things so difficult she would have to think about it and that tomorrow when I came in it would be a unpaid training. I just kinda hung up the phone and ended up sending her information to my local Department of Labor but I still like what the fuck is with some of these employers? I would think that this was an outlier but when I was talking with a coworker about this it's a common occurrence as this co-worker had something similar happen to them in 2020 and another coworker had something similar in 2021 and multiple others had dealt with something similar in 2022. Maybe it's just a thing that's happening in Denver mainly with shops in Cherry Creek. But I can't stop thinking about this experience and just needed to vent and put it out into the world.
