I gave up my career as a substance use disorder professional to work with dogs and cats.
Despite great pay and benefits, I was sick of workplace bullying, the constant stress, abuse from patients, etc.
I found a great job with cats and dogs but the pay is shit, benefits are shit. We earn pto at a slow pace of 3 hours every other weeks.
I am considering leaving the low stress job with pets to go back to my career.
Although I love my coworkers and the pets, I’m now am constantly stressed about money, time off, bills, and things like that.
Old job- offering at $2000 sign on bonus, m-f (530 – 130), 24 sick days, 2 weeks vacation (1st year), 1 week mental health, paid holidays, etc etc etc.
Current job- 3 hours pto every 2 weeks, 40% discount on pet supplies, ownership in the company, etc.
What threw me over the edge with my current job is the introduction of a point system. We aren’t allowed to be adults- like if I want to take a vacation without pay I’m not allowed to. For example, if I want to take a vacation but don’t have enough pto I will earn points against me. If I am late because of an accident on the freeway, I will earn a half of a point against me. My dog had to go to the emergency vet and was admitted and they threaten to put points against me.
At my last job we were treated like adults and if I needed to leave early, I could, if you wanted to take vacation without getting paid fine you’re an adult you can make those choices.
