I gave two weeks notice.

In October of last year a (union) company reached out to me for a possible employment opportunity. I work in the trades (HVAC) and I went through all the motions for this new job without saying anything to my old employer. This past Monday I was finally officially offered the position and told to put in my two weeks notice, which I did on Monday. I was fired on Wednesday after an “exit interview” with a manager. At the end of the conversation I was told that I needed to pay back a bonus they gave me when I first started. I said find the paper that stated I would have to pay it back, and honestly if I did have to pay it back then it's what I'll do. I started the new union job on Thursday. Today (Saturday) I received a notice in the mail from a law firm stating that I would need to pay back the loan with the paper in question the states I would need to pay it back. Maybe I should read before I sign things but whatever. I have to pay back over $2,000. I'm not worried about the amount. I will pay it back, but it will not be with a check. It will be with legal US tender pennies or whatever other coins I can get from the bank. There is no moral to this story. I have no anger towards my previous employer, it just feels scummy after I worked at a place where I genuinely like most everyone and at the end of the line it only comes down to money. So if it's money they want then it's money they will get.

If mods need proof or whatever I would be more than happy to provide pictures of the letter from the lawyer and the paper I signed. Even if I did read it I still would have taken the money.
