So I'm a disabled individual who collects some benefits, but also works part-time as a delivery driver for Uber Eats. As I'm sure people in here understand, the benefits alone aren't enough and if I work slightly TOO much I'll lose all my benefits including Medicare. So it's a careful balance.
Anyway, I've only been delivering for a couple weeks and today I had my longest delivery, which of course didn't tip. So I did a quick analysis of my time delivering so far and noticed a predictable pattern already developing:
McDonald's deliveries to low-income housing: tipped
Taco Bell deliveries to low-income housing: tipped
Starbucks deliveries to cash-register workers: tipped
Corporate lunch deliveries from a nice restaurant to the executive floor of a bank: no tip
30-minute drive to deliver gyros to John Deere: no tip
Now I don't expect to make a living off of this, I just expect to bring home a couple hundred extra bucks a month to supplement my benefits. But seriously? This is almost comedically predictable after the fact, but I was legit surprised when I saw that I got no tip for the half-hour one today.
So like, are these the rich people who think low-wage workers are “entitled” for wanting tips? It has to be right? How else do you make someone drive 30 minutes to bring you food and not tip? Especially when you easily make 6+ figures.
