I’ve been working at a Nike clearance store for 2 1/2 months now. I didn’t mind the job the first month but I’ve grown to despise it. The job is so strict it feels like you’re working in a prison. You’re not allowed to have your phone on you at all, even in your pocket. You must leave your phone in the lockers or risk getting coached or even written up if a manager sees it in your pocket. You can’t chew gum on the sales floor. If you’re one minute late, it’s considered an infraction. More than one infraction a month and you get pulled into the office for a coaching. I’ve even been pulled into the office by a manager who reviewed break room camera footage because I went to use the bathroom without telling someone. Every coaching starts off with “Is everything okay at home? Is there anything we can do to help you? Here’s a reminder of X policy”.
Constant micromanagement. If you’re on the register, you’re pressured to sign people up for Nike accounts to keep the “link percentage” up. If you’re on the sales floor, you’re pressured to hand out mesh bags. If you’re in the stockroom, you’re pressured to track your units per hour on a store app.
The shifts are 9 hours long. Even with 2 fifteens and a 1 hour unpaid lunch, the day feels like it drags on forever, your feet hurt, and you get tired of constantly cleaning up after people / hanging clothes and being in that environment for so long. I’m at the point where I’m considering changing my availability to either an 8 hour timeframe to only get 8 hour shifts, 5 hour time frame to only get half shifts, or just upright quitting and finding a new job. I’ve worked at Macy’s and Target before and never got burnt out this quickly before.
I hate Nike.
